Premium fruits: a growing trend and interest in expensive taste pleasures

Imagine you have $400 to spend on a fancy dinner. You can choose between a jar of first-class caviar, expensive wines or an upscale meal in a luxurious restaurant. Or you can spend that money on one pineapple.

The Rubyglow Pineapple retails for $395.99 from Melissa’s Produce, a California-based purveyor of specialty fruits and vegetables. Del Monte, a well-known wholesaler who specializes in pineapples, has put a lot of effort into developing the ruby-colored fruit, which became available in China earlier this year and has now hit the American market.
