Free in-flight meals became rare after the tragic events of September 11, when airlines were forced to cut service. Today, almost all unaccompanied international and domestic flights are subject to additional charges for meals, which also saves on taxes.

The innovative culinary offerings are only available to business and first class passengers, leaving others with their restaurant food patches in the clouds. While some companies have improved their menus and offerings, others have chosen to cut food costs to improve profitability and reduce production costs.
